This immense country’s rich in culture and characters. Who doesn’t know of Rasputin, Tolstoy, Peter the Great, Faberge, Catherine the Great and Stalin? Or Anna Karenina, Dr. Zhivago and Count Bezuhov? A country that poured more lives into winning WW2 than any nation has ever sacrificed - and then, ultimately, dealt with its own demons! A country that, for all its backwardness, can still lift payloads 10 times as big as the USA can into space! And let’s not forget the vodka and beluga caviar!

Excursions

For some trips, it is possible to purchase an excursion package in advance of travel. This allows you to be assured of your participation in the main excursions. If the minimum number of participants in a tour package is not met, you will receive a refund and then you can easily purchase these excursions ‘on the spot’. If this trip offers an excursion package, you can see below which excursions are included in the package. If no package for your trip is displayed below then you have the option of booking the separate excursions on the spot.

Individual excursions
During your trip it is possible to participate in several individual excursions. These will be offered to you by the tour leader and you will book them through him/her. These excursions are optional and you will need to pay for them out of your pocket money. The cost of these trips is taken into account when we give our opinion about the amount of pocket money that should be taken with you.

Prices
To give you an idea of the cost of individual excursions we mention here some reference amounts based on the price level of November 2011. These amounts are subject to change and are only meant to give you an indication. Because the entrance fees often change, they are not included in the tour price (unless explicitly stated).

Package excursions
£ 145

Listed below are the excursions included in the optional, pre-bookable excursion package. The prices are based on the participation of at least 10 participants. Entrance fees are exclusive (unless explicitly stated).

Moscow city tour - 4 hours

During the city tour by bus, we drive by one of the most beautiful religious buildings in Moscow in the Novodevitsjij monastery. On top of Vorobjovy Gory (Sparrow Mountain) you have a marvelous view over the city. The stately building of the University of Moscow dominates the mountains. With its 36 floors, it is also the highest of the seven Stalinist 'sugarloaf' buildings. The revival of the Orthodox Church led to the restoration of hundreds of churches during the Perestroika years. Christ the Savior Cathedral is the finest example. The cathedral was demolished in the thirties by order of Stalin and was replaced by the Palace of the Soviets, a monument to socialism.

Sergiev Posad Tour - 6 hours (including entrance)

Sergiev Posad is one of the most special places in the famous Golden Ring of Russia. The Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius is the heart of the Russian Orthodox Church and the most important pilgrimage site. The beautiful monastery complex is located 75 km northeast of Moscow. When visiting this holy monastery female visitors should wear headscarves, and men are required to remove their hats.

St. Petersburg city tour - 4 hours (incl. entrance: St. Isaac's Cathedral, Peter and Paul Cathedral and Church)

The city tour by bus visits all the important monuments of the city: the Peter and Paul Fortress (including a visit to the Peter and Paul Cathedral), St. Isaac's Cathedral (one of the largest in the world), the beautiful Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, and the busy main thoroughfare of St. Petersburg, the Nevsky Prospect, Smolny Cathedral (outside), the monument of Peter the Great and the vantage point of the Vasilevsky Island. Entrance fees for St. Isaac's Cathedral, Peter and Paul Cathedral and Church of Savior on the Spilled Blood are included.

The Kremlin, including entrance - 3 hours. Tour must be pre-booked and paid for.

Citadel of the Russian Tsars and now residence of the Russian president, a wonderful collection of historic buildings and monuments, magnificent cathedrals and churches with golden domes - The Kremlin has for centuries been the symbol of the power of government. During this excursion, we include a visit to the three main cathedrals and the Armoury Museum with its wonderful collection of artifacts and treasures of Russian tsars.
